I have experience running Wordpress in a hosted Linux environment. I've been a Windows Server IT Admin for years and I'm not afraid of the command line. I want to give setting up Ubuntu Server/Wordpress a shot on a virtual machine here at my office. I came across your very interesting post while searching for some useful documentation, but I see this article was written a couple of years back. Is the information in this post still pretty accurate?

hey there nice post, I was having some problems and came across this, seemed I was doing things right (different ways), when I went to http://server/wordpress i would get an error, I was assuming that it would re-direct me to set it up but it wasn't all I needed to do was the http://server/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php.

I like the myPHPAdmin, very useful indeed I was creating the databases with mysqladmin command

Thanks
:)

Good info... Mick and rrr: I don't think this is really meant for you. If you are asking if you need to register your domain before you get started, then this is over your head. You need to go get some books or something. Sorry to be blunt but ya got to start somewhere. Best of luck to all!

Hi There,
I was hopeing this would be the blow-by-blow how-to it promised to be and for the most part it is, however, as a low/mid-level experienced Linux user trying to set up my first Ubuntu WordPress Server running off my own small server pc, as my present HTML based web page on my service provided web space is pants at best.

You start off by explaining things in detail, but then get more ambiguous the further through the how-to you go.

Particilarly in the area of the final stages of setup, try reading your piece from the viewpoint of a virtual novice, or better still get a novice freind to follow the instructions and see how far they get before they have problems. This is a good indicator of how effective the how-to is because if you have to answer even one question, then that is a point in the how-to that needs clarifying.

Thankyou for the how-to, but could you please try to make it more novice freindly for web-server newbies like me.
